About Kinetic K-9's
My family owns a cabin in Michigan and every year we go to a local shelter and donate toys and food. I wasn't allowed to go in the back room where they kept the animals until third grade. When I did go to the back I found that living conditions of shelter dogs was far from your typical house dog. I asked the volunteer who worked at the shelter how much exercise the dogs get and her reply was that they usually get out twice or three times a week. This was astonishing to me. Those few words made me realize that shelter dogs are very much being deprived from the exercise they need. I then knew I wanted to make an organization that targeted animals.
There has always been a space in my heart for animals ever since I was little. The more thought about the shelter dogs, the more I realized I wanted to do something with dogs in animal shelters. Dogs in shelters don't have a voice to say what they are thinking or an owner to help them out. I thought it would great to give them a voice for once. A lot of other organizations focus on dogs in shelters so I wanted mine to be a unique cause. I know the main goal in shelter is to get adopted so exercise is a second for shelter pups. I really wanted to target exercise in some way because I knew that it was hard to get so many dogs the exercise they really need. After brainstorming with my mom, we thought it would be a great idea to put dog treadmills in humane societies. She had heard of dog treadmills and told me about them. I realized what a huge impact it would have on many shelter dogs because it will give them exercise, it will make them more adoptable because they will be in shape, the dogs can get exercise when the care takers are doing work because they can put it by their desk, the dogs can get exercise in the coldest days of winter and hottest days of summer, and most importantly it will give the dogs some much needed fun in their lives. I later looked up dog treadmills and came upon one that cost one thousand dollars. I thought, "Wow. That is a lot of money to raise." But of course, I set my goal to raise one thousand dollars.
I then had to think of the name for my organization. I wanted something to do with dogs and being active. I came up with the name
Kinetic K-9's. Kinetic means "in motion" which was perfect for my cause, and K-9's because of the dogs being active. To raise money, I did a lot of fundraising to help Kinetic K-9's. I started the fundraising by showing my 4th grade class a Power Point presentation to explain my cause. I also started selling Kinetic K-9' s glow-in-the-dark bracelets for five dollars. One of my favorite events was hosting a tiki party in my backyard. I asked my guests to bring a donation to help raise money for Kinetic K-9's. The party was a HUGE success! Between the party and bracelet sales, I almost had enough money to buy the treadmill. I again searched dog treadmills on Google and came upon another company called Dog Pacer. I looked at their pricing to compare it to the first treadmill and it was almost half the price of the other company! Plus, the Dog Pacer treadmill is unique in its design so all sizes of dogs can use it. My mom called Dog Pacer and told them about Kinetic K-9's. They VERY generously gave me one hundred dollars off the original price, plus provided free shipping. Even more importantly, a few days later the owner of Dog Pacer called back and said that the company was matching the purchased treadmill with one free treadmill! I was shocked and did not know what to say. I really appreciate all the time Dog Pacer spent with us and how much they have contributed to Kinetic K-9's. I want to send a HUGE thanks to Dog Pacer for their generosity.
Currently I have placed four treadmills and enough for three more! I hope to place one in all 50 states! This is a huge goal but I can complete it with your help! Please donate or buy a bracelet! I hope to continue Kinetic K-9's even when I am an adult. My first treadmill went to the Anti- Crulety Society. My seocnd went to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan, my third in California at the Central California SPCA, and my fourth in Central Florida.
The night I had thought of the idea of Kinetic K-9's my family and I went out to dinner to a Chinese restaurant. My fortune cookie said, "When opportunity knocks, answer the door." I heard opportunity calling and I answered and hope to make a meaningful difference in many dogs lives, one treadmill at a time.
